Weekly update: Rainbow Geese, stash report, OMG, and reading from With Strings Attached

Each day brings about two more minutes of daylight. Sunrise was at 6:30 Saturday. I turned around to start for home and got a photograph of the just-beyond full moon in the western sky.The temperature got to 50!  The bulbs are beginning to poke above the soil.  (Granted, these particular bulbs were on the sunny south side.)

Thanks again for your guesses and suggestions for the Rainbow Geese. I chose to set them in rows to emphasize each color.

I liked these vintage prints so much that I didn't want to use them!  I told myself firmly ...

Midweek: playing with triangles from With Strings Attached

The latest WITB ("what's in the box?") project uses the 4.5" unf HSTs I made for last year's Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

Can you guess which of these four layouts I chose?  (I have assembled the flimsy and I'm auditioning backings today.)  I'll tell you the answer in my post on Friday.

Linking up on Midweek Makers

Weekly update: solstice, a flurry of pink, and inspiration from With Strings Attached

I was at the lakefront to take  pictures of the solstice sunrise at 5:13 a.m. on Saturday.

The sun set at 8:32 p.m.  I didn't leave soon enough to reach open fields but the evening colors were spectacular, too.

This is Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie, WI.

Pink skies, pink fabric:  I am working on a baby quilt.  I got the design idea from a FB post (though I didn't note the source).  The name will be "A Star is Born."

Conveniently, pink is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for June so I'll ...

Weekly update: masks, houses, and how it turned out from With Strings Attached

Tulips, 6 a.m.

Tulips, 11 a.m.
What a variety of weather we've had!  Two warm days (first lawn-mowing of the season) followed by near-record chill with a touch of frost Saturday morning.  The parking lot and trails at the Camp Logan unit of Illinois Beach State Park were still flooded from the April 29 rain (3.37") but Saturday afternoon we tried Hosah Park (the one patch of lakefront that belongs to Zion Park District).  But where's the beach? Somewhere near Indiana by now.  Last summer there was sand at the end of the boardwalk and ...

Weekly update: masks, houses, rainbow rails -- and blog hop coming! from With Strings Attached

State parks were opened May 1 -- but our favorite part of the lakefront was closed this weekend due to flooding. (3.37" of rain fell on Wednesday.) We went to the marina and I hiked from that end as far as I could before encountering a 2" deep puddle that went across the trail.

(Photo on right is not the puddle. It's a stream flowing with the lake in the background.)

The 1/4" elastic I ordered from an eBay seller came Saturday. I wasn't careful when I shopped so I paid WAY too much -- $38 for 40 ...

Weekly update: sewing ahead from With Strings Attached

We attended church via YouTube yesterday. They've been recording the service for a couple of weeks but this was the first time we've tuned in. We sang along with the hymns.

It was sunny and warm for my afternoon walk. I saw a radio-tagged Blanding's turtle. (Here is information about the recovery program.)

I'm up to 49 Shelter in Place house blocks -- one per day of the stay-at-home order, so this takes me to May 2.

I want to sew ahead so that I can clean off the cutting table.  The sew-ahead includes making HSTs for ...

Weekly update: progress and something new from With Strings Attached

I finished the RSC rail fence blocks -- 46 in each of the ten colors.  They are 3-1/2".

These house-block mug rugs are my April OMG.
They are 8 x 10, somewhat larger than usual for mug rugs. The block is 6" finished and I didn't want to fiddle around with scaling it down.  The 2" window provides for fussy-cut "pictures."  As you can see, two are quilted and bound.

The house block was just what I needed for a quilted document of the Covid-19 pandemic.  I plan to make a block for each day of the shut down ...

Weekly update: keeping busy from With Strings Attached

Here are 3.5" rail fences and 3.5" HSTs in light blue, the RSC color for April.

I have squares and strips cut for other RSC colors but right now I'm busy making masks.

So far I've made 27.   The first batch used up the small amount of 1/4" elastic I had on hand.  There wasn't any elastic left at Wal-Mart and I just don't want to deal with online ordering.

Instead I found a pattern

for mask with ties and a filter pocket . A coffee filter will work.  I bought "chenille craft sticks ...

Weekly update: Luncheon winnings and a concert, RSC teal, Frolic dispatched, and the next project from With Strings Attached

The Lake County Women's Coalition Women's History Month Celebration was Saturday. The theme was "Valiant Women of the Vote in Lake County."  The Zion Woman's Club honoree was my friend and former coworker Rosemary who spearheaded the voter registration program at the library. The AAUW honoree was Sally who has coordinated AAUW's voter registration program and moderated many candidate forums.

There is a silent auction and raffle to raise funds for LCWC scholarships for women over 30 studying at the College of Lake County. They awarded three this year.

I contributed Crystal Chain (which I made ...

Weekly update: RSC, a finish, and a stumble from With Strings Attached

Here's one of my 2020 RSC projects, with bright green for January and orange for February.

Here's the other:  HSTs in the  monthly color plus neutral.

I quilted Star Crossed with free-motion swoops and swirls.  It's 54 x 66.

I made an 18th tablecloth tote bag (see  this post)  just to be sure I'll have enough for everyone at the Magpie meet up. [No photo.]

Stumble!  "Read the instructions through to the end. Read them again."  I did not follow that advice and mispieced ten sets of units for Frolic.  The HSTs in are supposed to ...

Weekly update: January summary and February plans from With Strings Attached

On Friday I wrote that I'd made 13 out of 16 tote bags. I am pleased to say that #14-#16 are finished! Now I can work on other projects.

But first, the January stash report:

Fabric OUT: 95-3/4 yards (which includes 61 yards to the quilt guild Raffle Mania)
Fabric IN: 126-3/4 yards (99 won at Raffle Mania, 11-3/4 from an estate sale, 15-1/2 from my Philadelphia trip), $105.  That's still a bargain at .83 per yard.
Net GAIN: 31 yards

Raffle Mania winnings

Philadelphia purchases
My new favorite fabric genre is African ...

Weekly update: Frolic and RSC from With Strings Attached

Part 6 of Frolic, the Quiltville mystery, was released January 1.  Part 7 was released January 3.

I am pleased to say that I've kept up with each part, though I admit that this latest was tedious. (Not hard, just a lot of counting, cutting, and sewing.)

Ever since I began participating in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge I've been attuned to patterns and designs that would lend themselves to all-one-color blocks.  Last year I made pinwheels in the monthly color plus gray, black, or taupe--one pinwheel for each day of that month. I haven't made anything out ...
